West Spirit

School Spirit at West Salem High School has a positive impact on our school because students feel that it positively brings people together to celebrate our school and others. Zoe Dunning, Captain of the Cheer team, said that “I feel that us having good school spirit is definitely a positive impact on our school and sports.” 

West has a really good school spirit system and is excellent at encouraging others and celebrating events and sports, for example at assemblies the school encouragement and uplifting atmosphere of it all is really boosting, like at football games,“west has a really good community and we all like to be uplifting and cheering during games and our student section goes above and beyond, it’s really cool to see,” said Zoe Dunning.  “I think that a lot of people like to participate in the school spirit and they think it’s something fun and especially at the assemblies,” according to Cora Casebeer, leadership student.

When asking people if they think west could do better a common reply was that the themes for games and activities should be better and more unique instead of just the same common ones every time and repeating them, and rather they try to branch out more with the themes and be more creative. Besides that, people do feel the strong titan spirit community around them and appreciate the school spirit here at west, they feel that it’s a strong school environment and players claim it makes them feel better and perform stronger when they have a cheering student section and proud fans participating and encouraging the game. 

When asking teachers how they feel about school spirits one of the most common replies was “I think it’s great. I think the leadership students have done a really great job and so has Mr O’Dell with putting it all together and promoting it as well,” Mrs. Quillin said.

West Salem High school spirit helps build pride in our community along with connection and motivation among the students and staff. It also helps create a nice welcoming environment where everyone feels included and supported, whether they are cheering in the stands,  performing on the field, or setting up events; it shows the values of West Salem High School.
