From the beginning of February to the end of April, National Honor Society is hosting a West Salem High School book drive. With help from NHS club advisor Mme. Beckstrom, books gathered during the drive will be distributed to those in need within the community.
This is a great act of kindness that West Salem offers. You can donate books in the library at the front desk. After interviewing Charlotte Kohler and Ms. Beckstrom they gave me some good information about the bookdrive. Ms. Beckstrom says, “Books are like friends you have a hard time letting go of, sometimes you just have to keep plugging away.” You can donate books from the first week of February through late April. NHS student executive Charlotte Kohler said that donated books will go to elementary schools and other community organizations.
It has been proven that reading at a young age helps learning about the real world and the information around you. According to Horizon Warner School of Education, “Instilling a love of reading early gives a child a head start on expanding their vocabulary and building independence and self-confidence. It helps children learn to make sense not only of the world around them but also people, building social-emotional skills and of course, imagination.”
Because of the numerous benefits of reading listed above, it is evident that the results of the drive will be put to good use. If you are interested in contributing to the drive, boxes to place books can be found in the main office and library.
National Honor Society is a proud team of WSHS students that helps out the community by doing various activities. If you want to learn more about the book drive or National Honor Society visit Ms. Beckstrom in B225.
