As we continue this school year, students are in a period of transition, which might include new teachers, schedules, and academic expectations. This adjustment is one that students have to make every year, many students can find it hard to recalibrate their routines and go back to school life.
Freshmen have a unique set of challenges with the big transition from middle school to high school. Many freshmen experience a mix of excitement and anxiety as they begin learning at higher, faster levels and learn how to navigate a larger school and a different social dynamic. Freshman, Kinlee Forbes says, “I liked middle school more because there wasn’t as much pressure that you have to do better.” She continues to say “Everything that was important in middle school is ten times more important like sports, tests, and all the school work.”
Our staff play such a crucial role in supporting this transition, especially for freshmen.”I think they are doing a pretty good job it’s just I feel like I need more time to adjust before all the work because it’s all been coming really quick.” Says Forbes.
Sophomore, Ruby Boje says, “Transitioning back to school after summer break was kind of hard at first because it’s hard getting back on schedule but it’s been getting easier!” She continues to say, “I think the difference between the beginning of this year and last year is this year I came to school less clueless with lots more people I know and I feel comfortable with.”
“I think I’m still working through this transition, in past years it’s been a lot easier because teachers are already giving out a lot of school work right off the bat,” Says Junior, Asa Scott.
Although the beginning of the school year can be daunting students continue to find a way to be successful and thrive in school. Bojes says, “Taking notes on everything and rereading my notes has been very helpful to retain the information in my head.” Scott says, “High school can be hard for anyone, but making good friends helps a lot, when you have friends in all your classes it enhances the experience.” Not only that but there are also new things happening every school year and so much to look forward to. “I think one specific thing I’m looking forward to this year is showing my school spirit. I can do this by going to school games, events, and being active in the West Salem High School community.” Says Boje.
When asked if she had any teachers that are helpful during this process and could be someone to talk to, Scott said, “I know Mr. Moneke he is always there to help and support his students if you have an issue he will help you 100% in and out of class and also another really good teacher is Mrs. Gelbrich she is also very supportive and is a safe space even if you just aren’t having a good day.”
Overall, this transition into the new school year can be an anxiety-filled experience, especially for freshmen but we have amazing, dedicated teachers and staff who are completely willing to help you through your transition.
